Non-Contact Speed Measurement

On moving surfaces – even at high accelerations

Should the speed of moving web and parts be accurately recorded in order to monitor, control and regulate machines? Measuring wheels and other tactile gauges do not offer sufficiently high measurement accuracy due to slippage or dependencies caused by material, surface or thickness as well as wear and tear. In addition, tactile measurement systems can damage the material surface due to scratching or tracking. What is needed is maintenance-free and permanently accurate sensors that measure on all surfaces, structures and colors without the need for parameter setting, regardless of whether the material to be measured is firm, soft, dry or damp, transported on belts or as a web, as a pipe, in endless production or as parts. The applications extends from portable use for speed measurement at any measurement point in production machines through the speedometer calibration to process optimization via differential speed measurement. The non-contact laser encoders μSPEED from ELOVIS are perfectly suited for such speed measurement applications.
